Al was raised on a mixed farm in eastern Alberta. Although his work took him away from that lifestyle, his heart remained “back home” on the prairie. Music was a part of growing up, singing around the piano at family gatherings, singing with a group in high school and around campfires. Al’s songwriting started by changing words to existing songs to commemorate friends’ birthdays, anniversaries, etc. Then he gradually changed to writing songs from scratch. His songs echo stories and experiences of rural life and of the many characters encountered over the years. Braiding rawhide horse gear keeps him connected to the cowboy culture.
